Pentecost 2019 – Harry’s Letter

“I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being…”  Ephesians 3:16

Dear Friends,

Over twenty years ago an Irish songwriter named Robin Mark penned a song called ‘Revival’. He wrote, “I feel it in my spirit, feel it in my bones. You’re gonna send revival, bring them all back home.” Robin and many of the rest of us are revivalists. We hope and pray and wait for the Holy Spirit to move in a fresh way that will sweep multitudes into faith in Jesus and a hunger for Scripture, worship, fellowship, prayer and transformation.

This is essentially what happened on the day of Pentecost described in Acts 2. Thousands responded to Peter’s message (2:41). It was like fire in a forest of dry kindling. It has happened again sporadically in the history of the church – for example, during the Reformation in the 1500s and the Great Awakening in the time of John Wesley (founder of Methodism, 1700s). More recently there have been signs of revival in Africa, Latin America, China and elsewhere.

It is important to remember that such movements are the sovereign work of God alone. We can program, re-organize, re-educate and whip ourselves into an emotional frenzy, but, as the Psalmist points out, “Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labour in vain.” Ps. 127:1 That’s not to say we have no part to play. We can pray, preach and prepare. “Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy”. Ps. 126:5  Such is life in the Spirit.

June 9th is Pentecost Sunday and we will be sharing in the Lord’s Supper at our three churches. It is also a time to call on our Lord Jesus to “Revive us, revive us with your fire!” All are welcome at the table of the Lord. See you there!
