BAIT AND SWITCH
Sunday, Mar. 1, 2020
It strikes me that the nature of temptation is ‘bait and switch’. There’s an attraction that lures us in with much promise but then turns around and bites us…. – Harry
THE REVEAL
Sunday, Feb. 23, 2020
This is about the day when Jesus took 3 disciples up a mountain and was altered in appearance so that he shone like a bright light. They call this the ‘transfiguration’. God was cluing in the disciples as to who this really was. Great clues were given to them, but what are our clues? – Harry
LIABILITY
Sunday, Feb. 16, 2020
We all probably realize that if we deliberately kill someone we’re in big trouble. We’re ‘liable’ to judgment. Jesus takes this a lot further, explaining that we’re liable for being angry at each other and for calling each other names. For those of us with anger issues this poses a challenge. – Harry
BLESSED
Sunday, Feb. 2, 2020
In what are called the ‘Beatitudes’ Jesus essentially paints a picture of human life that is rather the opposite of what we’ve been taught to believe. We think the rich are blessed – Jesus says it’s the ‘poor in spirit’. We think the happy are blessed – Jesus says it’s the bereaved, the sorrowful. – Harry
LIGHTING UP
Sunday, Jan. 26, 2020
The Bible uses the metaphor of light and darkness to describe the difference between good and evil, right and wrong. This explores that a bit more deeply. – Harry
THE HANDOFF
Sunday, Jan. 19, 2020
One of Jesus’ disciples, Andrew, was first a disciple of John the Baptist. How different would that be? John fasted, ate locusts and wild honey and lived in the desert. Jesus went from village to village, party to party, adventure to adventure. – Harry
THE KICKOFF
Sunday, Jan. 12, 2020
Jesus began his ministry by submitting to the baptism of John. This was fairly low-key and very humble on the part of Jesus. John said to him, “You should be baptizing me!” By doing this Jesus honoured all the previous revelation of God (see Old Testament) as represented by John. God showed his presence with a gentle demonstration of power and a strong affirmation of his Messiah. – Harry
GRACE UPON GRACE
Sunday, Jan. 5, 2020
The first chapter of the gospel of John tells us that “from his (Jesus’) fullness we have all received grace upon grace”. That’s quite a statement. Everyone receives gift upon gift and provision upon provision. For those who trust in Christ, the Word made flesh, there are forgiveness, mercy and spiritual gifts (grace) piled on top of all the other kindnesses. – Harry
