Sanctuary Painting Appeal

Peeling paint on tin ceiling in sanctuary

Greetings to all members and friends of Haliburton United Church!

The Haliburton United Church building is a beautiful and iconic part of Haliburton village. Not only have we been worshiping in this building for 113 years, but it also continues to be the home of many community groups as well. It is our privilege and responsibility to keep this building in good condition. We also feel it is important to guard the beauty and appeal of the sanctuary setting where we worship each Sunday.

It has become apparent to us recently that the walls and the ceiling of the main part of the sanctuary, as well as the vestibule, are in dire need of repair and re-painting. The picture at the bottom of this note reveals the paint coming away from the tin ceiling. There are several cracks in the plaster that need to be repaired as well. We understand it’s been about 50 years since the last painting.

Last winter we engaged Renée Griffiths of As Good As New Painting to re-finish the chancel (front of the church) and she did an amazing job.  She very kindly did this for us for just the cost of materials. We have contracted her to do the nave (main body of the church) and vestibule and although it may seem costly, she is offering a reduced rate, and she does very high-quality work. The work involves removing the pews, erecting scaffolding, removing old paint etc. It should take about 3 weeks. We will be meeting for worship in the Fellowship Room during this time.

The total cost for this undertaking is just over $16,000. This is an appeal to those who may be able and willing to help with the project to donate accordingly. All donations qualify for tax receipts for charitable purposes. We thank you for your prayerful consideration.
