Pentecost 2023 – Harry’s Letter

“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7

Dear Friends,

We’re coming up to Pentecost, which is our yearly reminder of the presence and work of the Holy Spirit. I’ve noticed that although many are familiar with the Father and the Son, people often draw a blank when it comes to the Holy Spirit. Simply put, God-the-Holy-Spirit enables us to continue the work of Jesus in our time and circumstances. As Jesus said, in telling his followers about the Comforter (the Holy Spirit), “Truly, anyone who trusts in me will do what I have been doing. They will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.” Jn. 14:12

If you consider St. Paul’s words as quoted above, you’ll notice that ‘a spirit of power, of love and of a sound mind’, describes the work and way and character of Jesus rather well. This is the same spirit we have been given – through the Holy Spirit. Note that ‘power’ does not mean ability to coerce or bully anyone. It is an inner strength of conviction and confidence that issues in courage to tell others about Jesus and the gospel.

Sunday, May 28th, is Pentecost Sunday and we will gather to share in the Lord’s Supper. Gathering around Jesus’ table is one of the main ways that we show and celebrate that we are the family of God. I hope you will join us and pray that many more will come to know this sweet fellowship ‘in the Spirit’.

In Christ’s love,
